Comfortable Fit Is More Critical Than Sound
Without sounding too impressed with myself I would like to claim that I know rather a lot about headphones. I have gone through many brands and used multiple models from each. After all my hunting for the perfect headphones I have both found out what makes the perfect headphones as well as why some popular designs will always fail.
If you're planning on buying headphones online make sure you go to a store first and try some on. The fit is the most vital part of your headphones and it is not a terrible thought to test the sound while you are at it. Please do not be one of the fashionable iPod headphones users who still use the white ear buds that come with the iPod. The iPod is over a decade old and they still use those dreadful ear buds. They don't fit anyone's ears and consistently fall out.
Headphone companies that market the quality of the sound usually are not the ideal solution. I don't care how good your headphones sound if they feel uncomfortable and fall off every fifteen seconds. Even ear bud manufacturers brag about the standard of the small speakers and amplifiers they use but it truly doesn't matter and here is why. 99% of headphones users are listening to an iPod, iPhone or some other tiny digital portable gizmo which has compressed the music to fit on it.
Talking generally iPod mp3 sound isn't that good because it has been compressed but 99% of the people can't notice the difference. In a home theatre setting with blueray discs or using hi fi installers I confess is simple to hear the difference in sound quality but this is not as true with headphones. Even DVDs compress the sound to fit a giant video file on 4 gigs.
Some folks prefer over the ear headphones and some would rather have earphone buds. Personally I believe both have their advantages and disadvantages. If you will be flying on an aircraft or traveling in a motionless position I suggest using over the ear headphones. Sound cancelling headphones are the best satisfaction but do make sure they are comfortable as even gigantic pricey headphones can pinch ears and become uncomfortable in time. If you are moving about a lot than ear buds are the better choice. I used to compete in snowboarding and ear buds always worked for me but when I travelled between contests I would not exist without my noise cancelling over the ear headphones.
