Horse Photography Pays
Is it even possible to get a horse to pose? Unless, of course, you are this lady equestrian photographer of Pasadena, California, whose horse portraits are trotted out for show in such homes as those of famous celebrities. She was once a girl who borrowed her first camera from Pasadena City College (PCC) and now takes her motor home to tracks and shows, including the Montreal Olympics, where she snapped photos of British Princess Anne. Horses were the easiest to shoot for practice when she attended photography class at PCC after graduating from Pasadena High School. The Eaton Canyon Riding Stables were just a jump away from where she lived as a kid. The horses at the nearby stables served as good subjects for her homework, for which she would take her borrowed camera on the weekends. Even though she was also studying music, art and journalism, a sale of one of her pictures to a proud horse owner sent her hobby galloping towards a career.
Her first job was as an assistant to two famous equestrian photographers, for which she helped focus and pose horses at shows, tracks, and state fairs throughout the country. Second, she hooked up with another photographer pair, who stayed the California circuit. Today, she uses a Swedish camera with German lens, and her mother takes care of the business side of things.
She is known for exciting shots, from clearing six-foot hurdles to nosing a win. However, horses also get down on all four hoofs for formal portraits. There are hams among horses, too. Some horses facilitate pictures by raising their heads or perking their ears. There are other horses that won't move a muscle to help you. She said taking a good horse photo is not as easy as it seems. Those hunters and jumpers, for instance, should be caught in mid-air with their knees and legs in a tucked position and bodies at a correct angle. With Tennessee walkers, the best photos are those with their front hoofs in action and an over reaching hoof with their hind legs. A low slide is the best angle for a stock horse, and high head and legs is the best angle for a saddle horse. Some of her acclaimed works are of the Peruvian Paso, an endangered South American species that groups are scrambling to have multiplied. Their best angle is with their forelegs rolled toward the outside. Their value increases with the white ponchos and elaborate gear sported by their riders.
Photography is the key to meeting celebrity horse enthusiasts. Her camera work had her talking with royalty. She was able to get close to the Queen, of all people, after photographing Princess Anne at the Montreal Olympics. The Queen admitted her anxiety over watching her daughter take the high jump. Not long ago for a change of career pace, the photographer, who in her spare time swims, back packs, bicycles, pans for gold and sometimes even rides a horse, took on an industrial job snapping pictures of forklifts.
