The Murky Origins of St. Valentines Day
Christmas has a very detailed and deeply religious story attached to it, so you'd think that something known as St. Valentines Day would be in a similar boat. But when you start digging for the historical roots of this day, you actually come up with almost nothing. It's true that you do find three real individuals with the name Valentine, but what possible connection they might have, if any, with a festival celebrating romantic love is much harder to discover.
The three different people who supposedly contributed to St. Valentines Day were each martyred after persecution by the Romans, sometime in either the second or third centuries AD. The first two, Valentine of Rome and Valentine of Terni, are both buried on the Via Flamina in Rome, with a few of their relics in other places. There was a third Valentine, martyred in Africa, but that's about all anyone knows about him. The first two especially are frequently mentioned in connection with the history of Valentines Day, and yet there doesn't seem to have been much romance linked to either of them.
These three saints were honored through the centuries, but in the popular mind there was only one Valentine by the time St. Valentines Day actually began to be celebrated. People built fictions around the life of this mythical figure, some based in what appears to be fact, in which the Valentine of Rome ran afoul of the Emperor Claudius. But there are no real love poems or letters in the story, beyond one letter supposedly written to the daughter of Valentine's jailer. The connection with romance simply isn't there, despite the mythologizing.
It's possible that it was a rather mercenary act of the church that attached Valentine's name to what became St. Valentines Day. As the church grew in power, it began to Christianize many ancient pagan festivals by slapping its own festivals onto the same dates and propagating Christian myths to accompany them. And to combat the pagan Lupercalia fertility festival, held around February 14th, it may have devised the whole Valentine's Day scenario almost out of nothing. So the real Valentines, all three of them, may have no genuine connection to the day at all.
