In What Ways Is Music Consumption Changing?
The world of music consumption changing so rapidly that it seems it is difficult to keep pace with the twists and turns in the intricate plotline of music online. clearly, those predictions about the music industry falling flat on its face and dying a slow, deprived death were in indeed grossly exaggerated or misinformed, we still have a healthy industry. In spite of this the industry has morphed into a different beast to what it was even ten years ago, now more music is downloaded online.
Since Limewire, the illegal P2P file sharing program was shut down, the fuss over illegal downloads has died down. No matter how many times these services are shut down however, news ones take their place and as long as people would rather spend money on Corsica villas then on music, there will be illegal download services.
There seems to be a new trend developing however whereby people will now not even download songs from iTunes or the like, rather they will endeavour to get all their content for free. New services like Spotify aim to do just this. Spotify has a similar interface to iTunes, if anything it is even simpler, simply slecet anything you want to listen to and it can be streamed directly from the net.
SoundCloud is another service that is very similar, using streaming services to allow users to listen to all the content they get get their hands on. For me, this undermines the very purpose of iTunes, why have a vast libraray of songs which takes up space when you can access almost anything free of charge streamed straight from the net? This way you'll have more money left over for Luxury Villas Villas in Greece and any other extraneous items you wish to purchase. I guess it all comes down to how much you value music, if you are really passionate you will pay for it, if not you'll take it or leave it.
