Does AOL Radio Mean The Extinction Of FM Stations?
Online radio such as AOL Radio, Slacker, Pandora and Last.fm have gained popularity recently. Furthermore, several cordless products including cell phones support these platforms. I will look at the influence of online radio on conventional radio broadcasters to find out if this means the end of local radio stations.
I appears that local radio stations are on their way to become extinct. They are being threatened by the development of online and satellite radio. These competing services generally offer hundreds of music and entertainment channels. Some of the channels are even commercial-free. The internet has enabled access to a virtually infinite number of online radio channels.
While historically local radio has been the only truly mobile radio, online radio services including Pandora are now accessible on wireless audio transmitter and portable products such as cell phones.
AOL Radio utilizes CBS radio as its broadcasting platform. It comes with in excess of 200 music channels. Moreover it offers access to over 150 local CBS radio stations. The underlying platform “play.it” also has a feature that allows listeners to create their own radio stations by entering preferred albums, artists etc. The individual tracks of each music channel are also available for storage on an iPod via 3rd-party software such as iGetMusic.

Is the extinction of local radio near? The increase of competition from satellite and online radio has started to take away listeners from local radio stations. Traditional radio seems to have a difficult time to halt this trend. Particularly niche broadcasters have found online radio very practical. The main cause is the low broadcasting cost of online radio compared with terrestrial radio. An additional cause is the problem acquiring frequency spectrum licenses from the FCC. However, increasing royalty fees have made the life of online broadcasters more difficult lately.
The large number of accessible stations is a big plus for online radio listeners. On the other hand, this is a difficulty for online broadcasters. This large number of stations is diluting the number of listeners. As a result streaming radio broadcasters have found it difficult to be profitable. At the same time, on the other hand, there is less pressure to insert commercials due to the lower costs of broadcasting in comparison with conventional stations. This has made online radio content more interesting than terrestrial radio.
One big advantage of local stations however is local content like news or current events. Up to now the poor audio quality of FM radio has been a big disadvantage. Nonetheless, recent digital radio broadcasts are set to enhance the audio quality. One of these technologies is HD radio. Content and mobility will be crucial in deciding the destiny of online and local radio. Online radio provides a large number of choices while local radio excels by providing local content. Both online and local broadcasts offer great mobility. For that reason it is hard to predict a clear winner in this radio battle.
