How Gospel Is Sung
If in the past you have heard Mahalia Jackson and Andre Crouch sing gospel songs, you probably know the sensation of being serenaded by angels from heaven. Now you want to find out how to sing gospel.
If gospel songs can be so powerful, why do they fall flat when the common church choir attempts them? There are certain techniques you can try when you want to perform evangelical singing.
Gospel music originated through the American south during the 19th century, and these were first sung by black Americans. African slaves were largely uneducated (and in some states forbidden by law or by their owners to become literate), so they were taught the Christian faith through repetitive call-and-response songs.
There's a leader who sings one line while the group sings some other, in call-and-response singing. There is a part of your song that everybody sings in unison. The melody and lyrics are simple, and the style is sensitive to emotions.
In comparison, songs by Charles Wesley or Isaac Watts are much more complicated. In this type of evangelical music, vocal strategy is needed more than just enthusiasm for the song. A person should study the song! A lot of groups sing this kind of songs with little feeling. This formal type of religeous song is perfect for a more solemn atmosphere.
Faith is celebrated through music, that's why the majority of evangelical songs are very mild Relax, let loose, or have fun! That does not imply you should ignore vocal technique, however. Professional singers know that techniques for singing evangelical songs are like those essential for opera.
When you sing gospel, you need to have great breathing strategies and a potent voice. Heartfelt music is mandatory and the voice needs to be like that of an angel. You are revealing a story, and to convey it successfully you need to feel it and believe it yourself. Your audience should be motivated by emotions.
Gospel music demands you to breathe well. Breathing practice using the Fontanelli exercise is great for this kind of singing. Stand with great posture and gradually breathe in through your mouth while mentally counting to four, then exhale slowly to another count of four, trying to expel all of your air you took in. Watch yourself in a full-length mirror to be sure you fully expand your midsection, and try to preserve that expansion while exhaling.
When you master the 4-count, try counting to 5 then 6. When you work up to seven or eight, add a hold phase. Breathe in for a count of four, hold for a count of four, and breathe out to a count of four. Watch to make sure you achieve and maintain great expansion.
The next thing to work on is dynamics. For training your dynamics, try messa di voce (Italian for "placement of the voice") technique. Sing a pitch that you're comfortable with. Without changing the pitch, make your voice louder gradually.
Read the lyrics to learn what the song is saying. Think of an image to hang on to while singing the song. Watch movies of great evangelical singers, such as Mahalia Jackson (you will find several on YouTube).
The words are paramount when you know how to sing evangelical songs. Keep in mind, these songs are supposed to connect in a powerful way with the audience. Sing the song but make sure you enunciate the lyrics well. Above all, rejoice! More than anything, evangelical music is JOYFUL. Sing it like you completely mean it.
