Old Bluesmen Warrant The Recognition As Much As The Beatles

There are no legends in music these days like the old champs. Is there any reason for this predicament ? Have all the tunes been done? Or possibly it is because nobody respects the music anymore.

For a brief time in the early nineties, it seemed that music was securing its soul again and turning its back to corporate America. That, however, didn’t stay too long and the bubble gum machine was back on the rise before the turn of the century.

This is not original in the world of music and radio. There was a time when some wonderful remarkable artists were slowly becoming famous; the problem back then was not their talent but the colour of their skin. Bluesmen like Leadbelly or Blind Lemon Jefferson were the fads in the late twenties. It seemed their words filtered through many kinds of music, from dance to ballads to even children’s songs.

The sound of blues gradually turned into that of rock-n-roll. With the evolution of the new sound, many good artists were left on the side of the road without a dime because of corporate record motives. One of the great singers that did make it out of this time was Elvis Presley. Presley grew up listening to the blues down south and always held them close to his soul. It is obvious on early Elvis Presley vinyl recordings that Presley was an enthusiast of the great blues legends.

As rock grew throughout the years, the sound of rock traveled across the pond to England. England didn’t really have any knowledge of the blues sound at the time. What England did own, however, were the Beatles.  Once the first Beatles vinyl album hit, music was never the way it had been again.

In decades that followed, many artists came along trying to duplicate the success of the Beatles or that of Elvis Presley, but these two musical acts are what many would consider true legends. You will always have protestors saying that Elvis ripped off Jerry Lee Lewis or the Stones were better than the Beatles, but the album sales through history will be the true authority.

There will probably never be any LP’s held in the same esteem as that of Elvis Presley vinyl or Beatles vinyl. However, the real founders of rock-n-roll, the bluesmen, will never reach the same height of fame.
