AOL Radio - The End Of Local Radio?
AOL Radio, Pandora, Slacker and Last.fm are some of the online radio services which have become popular these last few years. Many of these are also accessible on portable devices including mobile phones. Does this mean the end of traditional radio stations? I will look at the influence of streaming radio on the radio landscape.
Local radio stations do seem to have a hard time these days. Satellite radio has been cutting the market share of traditional radio stations severely in the past couple of years by offering mobility, a big number of commercial-free music channels in addition to news and entertainment channels. Specifically, online radio has become quite popular by providing a practically indefinite number of radio stations.
While historically local radio has been the only truly mobile radio, online radio providers including Pandora are now accessible on wireless audio transmitter and portable products such as mobile phones.
AOL Radio offers over 200 music channels and even 150 national CBS radio stations because it uses CBS radio as its platform. The underlying platform “play.it” also has a feature that allows listeners to create their own radio stations by entering favored albums, artists etc. The individual tracks of each music channel are also available for storage on an iPod via 3rd-party software such as iGetMusic.
Pandora and other online radio services have equally started to offer customized music. The user can enter music-related information such as artist, track or album name. These channels will then select tracks which are similar to the information entered. So far, however, competing music services have fallen short to offer similarly fully customized radio channels.
Are traditional radio stations destined to become extinct by the constant decrease of market share due to online radio? Online radio is especially useful for niche broadcasters who have been unable to broadcast due to the high price and licensing of frequency space.
The big number of available stations is a big advantage for online radio listeners. On the other hand, this is a difficulty for online broadcasters. This big number of stations is diluting the number of listeners. Consequently streaming radio broadcasters have found it difficult to be profitable. At the same time, however, there is less pressure to insert commercials because of the lower expenses of broadcasting compared with conventional stations. This has made online radio content more appealing than terrestrial radio.
One big plus of local stations though is local content such as news or current events. Moreover, local radio is now improving the audio quality by using digital transmission technologies versus conventional FM broadcasts which has been a big benefit of online radio so far. It is hard to predict a clear winner in the battle between online and local radio as both offer their own exclusive content and high mobility which are the essential aspects that will decide the fate of each service.
