Will AOL Radio Cause The Extinction Of FM Stations?
Online radio services such as AOL Radio, Pandora, Slacker and Last.fm have become rather popular recently and are even available on a lot of mobile cordless products such as mobile phones. I will look at the effect of online radio on conventional radio broadcasters to determine if this means the end of local radio stations.
Local radio appears to be having a hard time in today's radio landscape with competing satellite and online radio providers taking away listeners by offering commercial-free music and entertainment. The internet has allowed access to a nearly unlimited number of online radio stations.
Pandora along with other online radio providers have become available on wireless audio transmitter and portable products by installing the appropriate app. This raises convenience and mobility of online radio. Mobility has thus far been the largest plus of local radio.
AOL Radio which boasts 200 plus music channels of 25 genres makes use of CBS radio as its underlying platform. It also offers access to 150 national CBS radio stations. Listeners can also make their own customized radio stations at the CBS radio "play.it" website and save each track for playback on an iPod by employing 3-rd party software iGetMusic.
Users can also create customized radio on other online music services by entering the artist and album names and these providers will play songs based on that information. Other services, on the other hand, fail to offer fully customized music channels.
Does online radio mean the extinction of local radio? The increasing number of choices evidently is going to reduce the market share of conventional radio broadcasters. Online radio has proved practical in particular for niche broadcasters because of the inherently lower broadcasting expense compared with local radio stations.
While the variety of stations is a benefit to listeners, it is at the same time diluting market share and online radio broadcasters are finding it hard to draw a reasonably big number of listeners and be lucrative. At the same time, however, there is less pressure to insert commercials because of the lower costs of broadcasting in comparison with traditional stations. This has made online radio content more interesting than terrestrial radio.
Local programming such as news and local events, nonetheless, will remain one of the big advantages of local radio. So far the poor audio quality of FM radio has been a big disadvantage. Nonetheless, latest digital radio broadcasts are set to improve the audio quality. One of these technologies is HD radio. Content and mobility will be crucial in deciding the destiny of online and local radio. Online radio provides a large number of alternatives while local radio excels by supplying local content. Both online and local broadcasts offer great mobility. Therefore it is hard to predict a clear winner in this radio battle.
